Welcome PreSchool 2016-2017

PreSchool Class 2016-2017

Welcome

We've joined together as classmates
as the new year begins...
A year full of learning,
While we become friends.
We'll share and be kind,
as we work and play.
And our friendships will grow
with each passing day!

In the PreSchool classroom, life is all about learning how to work with others. In the past few weeks, we have been encouraging teamwork, communication, collaboration, and cooperation. In the classroom we have been engaged in fun and inviting ways. We have read many books on teamwork, cooperation and friendship. In addition, a few activities we have been promoting are; building with blocks, working on floor puzzles, art activities and other fun games. Cooperative games help foster and encourage collaborative skills and teach sportsmanship as children play by helping each other. These games emphasis on fun and teamwork rather than resulting in a win. This group is amazing at “Talking it out!” They are learning to wait their turn, ask for help and try new things. Also, by using nice words and asking or making a plan with a friend usually results in a very positive conversation and a rewarding feeling. Great work PreSchool!

The PreSchoolers have been completing a daily “Question of the day” for many months now....   A question of the day is an activity that we use each morning during our Morning Meeting time to teach how to collect and organize data in a graphic representation, as well as, teach them to analyze the data.  From a mathematical standpoint, using a question of the day can help students understand and use mathematical language such as more than, less than, equal, and the same. Question of the day can also support literacy development because the students are learning to recognize their names in print, understand that print has meaning, track the print in the sentence, and use picture cues to help them understand the text.   We have certainly enjoyed our daily questions and discovering more about each other too.

After many days.... We now create our own questions and make a "survey question" for friends to answer.  Each student thinks of a question and then will ask friends to put an "X" under the appropriate column to collect the responses.  The PreSchoolers have had some great questions.

"Do you like cookies?"
"Do you like pink or blue?"
"Do you have a pet?"
"Do you like rainy days?"

I just love it!  It incorporates math standards (collecting and analyzing data, graphing, tallying, etc...) along with literacy standards. It also quickly became another classroom favorite which is further developing their independence, confidence and communication skills.

Pipe Cleaner Structures

We had so much fun creating a work of art with

pipe cleaners, all while working on our fine

motor dexterity, tripod grasp, and eye-hand

coordination.

Taking a museum walk around our
 "Pipe Cleaner Structure"
Gallery!

Appreciating our work with our eyes ...
